Some people know early in life what they are meant to do with their lives. And Saundra Grillo, CEO of the Skin Rejuvenation Center & Spa in Danvers knew her calling from a very young age was to make people feel good about themselves.

“I use to sketch faces out of fashion magazines when I was little — studying the angles and lines of the faces,” Grillo said. “I even wrote to Estee Lauder when I was ten years old asking her how I could become a cosmetic chemist. She wrote me back a letter and told me what I needed to do!”

Grillo reached those goals and more, becoming a licensed Medical Esthetician and Permanent Makeup Artist who is a nationally recognized educator, lecturer and practitioner in her field. On the walls of her Water Street center are photos of Grillo who seemingly has not aged over her 20 years in business, including a photo of her with Beatle George Harrison and his wife who she had helped with their skin care.

Grillo lives in Salem, but she has been at her Water Street location for five years now and prior to that on Newbury Street.

“I didn’t even have to advertise. My clients were all from word of mouth,” Grillo said proudly.

That loyal following may be because Grillo has had an uncanny ability to understand on a cellular level what treatments would really work for her customer’s skin. She was among the first in the area to offer medical microdermabrasion before it became a traditional offering among esthetician’s. And now with a new cutting edge technology called Apollo, she has the same excited feeling that this tool will make a difference to people seeking anti-aging results without pain or surgery. Apollo, has also shown success in reducing the appearance of acne scars, stretch marks and cystic acne.

Although this treatment option is well known in Asia and Europe, the center in Danvers is the first on the North Shore to have the Apollo machine created by a company called Pollogen since receiving FDA approval in the United States.

Grillo has been amazed by the results the Apollo can yield by tightening the skin of the face, neck and other areas of the body. The best part is there is no pain, and the treatments, which have a heating element, are actually relaxing to the client as the skin is treated with the three electrodes on the hand held device. Grillo said clients have compared it to a hot stone massage, only with visible results.

The Apollo sessions are typically two hours and from the clinical trials so far the results are long lasting. Grillo said results can be seen as soon as the first treatment but most clients will do several sessions to secure the result they desire.

“It took me about 9 months to get the Apollo machine — I almost felt like I gave birth to it! But now that it is here I am thrilled,” Grillo said of the device that came all the way from Israel.

The Skin Rejuvenation Center & Spa has a homelike, nurturing atmosphere where customers strike up conversation with one another about the treatment they just had and what has worked for them.

“I want anyone who walks through the door to feel comfortable and leave feeling good about themselves,” Grillo said. “We are not located in Beverly Hills – we are in Danvers and I am keenly aware of the economy so we have many different options for all budgets. I want to make it affordable for any woman to get into a program to improve the health of their skin.”

Men are a growing segment of her client base too, accounting for 30%. Grillo invites men and women to call her and schedule a consultation where she will analyze their skin and talk with them about their individual issues and customize options for their needs. “I am here to educate people as much as I can. The skin is an outer organ that reflects what is going on inside and understanding our role in the aging process is important,” Grillo said.

In her fifties, Grillo is a walking advertisement for the benefits of proper skin care.

“No product or treatment is offered in my center that I do not fully believe in. We test everything ourselves and go to great lengths to offer only quality products. There are so many things we can do to achieve a more youthful appearance — without doing surgery. It really is exciting.”
